'd been black a long time. i didn't get my gifts. so i'm a little miffed with the barack obama white house. >> it might be under your pillow, under the christmas tree. >> i have a feeling chris christie might have gotten gifts before i did. i would think if you're trying to market a product, the product being the republican party, probably not a good idea to insult the following demographics you'd like to one day pursue, latinos, african-americans, young people. mitt romney has insulted everyone that the republican party operatives now want to win over. so i think the gift he might want to give his party is the gift of silence. >> let's talk about the rank stupidity of romney and the candidate himself. how did he not know that others would be getting these tapes? this was at a big fund-raiser where he got betrayed in effect by videotape once before. at this point those donors have nothing before in letting ashley and others be involved. >> when your staff sent me ashley's articles, i hadn't seen the remarks yet. when i read them, it made me really angry. it made me feel like this guy who l
on this administration. >> obama: she made the appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody they should go after me. i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador, who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence she had received, and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. >> now where in there did he say "pick on" pop those were their words. >> stephanie: exactly. and by the way you know who is back to the administration is paul wolwitz. what everybody has said. there were fast-moving events from the middle east. they said this was the intelligence they had at the time. this is lindsay graham yesterday. >> this is about the role she played about four dead americans when it seems to me that the story coming out of the administration, and she's the point person is so disconnected to reality, i don't trust her. the reason why i don't trust her is b
as it goes into effect over the next year. with obama safely in the white house for another term, house republicans say they will no longer try to repeal the affordable care act. but they are putting some intense scrutiny on how those changes are taking place. the house ways and means committee is now issuing a subpoena for health and human services secretary kathleen sebelius. they're demanding to know how the agency is using taxpayer money to pay for p.r. and advertising campaigns. health and human services has signed at least two contracts. one of those worth $20 million. the house ways committee says americans deserve to know where their money is going. meanwhile, employer health insurance premiums just saw their lowest increase in the last 15 years. at the beginning of the decade, premiums were going up by 10% to 15% but this year, the increase was just 4%. now the bad news, this does not necessarily mean lower cost for you. employers know when the healthcare reform goes into full effect in 2014, they will have t
lee atwater made the willie horton ad a key part of george h.w. bush's 1988 bid for the white house. and in 2012 the same ugliness took center stage in the gop primary. >> we know president obama is the best food stamp president in american history. >> i don't want to make black people's lives better by giving them somebody else's money. i want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money. >> you're doing it because you care about america. paul and i have not promised you a bigger check from the government. >> as atwater said, the message is coded. but what he's getting at is crystal clear. joining me now is toure, host of "the cycle" here on msnbc, and the man who tracked down the atwater tape, james carter iv. he's an opposition researcher and the grandson of president jimmy carter. thank you both for coming on the show. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> james, first of all, tell us how you got your hands on this tape. >> well, i started looking for it after some of the racially coded language in this campaign, and i came across this quote several times during my researc
